Reclaiming pre-registration VAT

Hi everyone,

I am shortly doing my first VAT return - we are a newly VAT registered business. We buy in a reasonable number of goods and services from Europe. So my question is, with regards to VAT incurred pre-registration, can I only reclaim VAT where my supplier had a GB VAT number? What about if they have an FR or LU VAT number? I'm guessing it can't be reclaimed but didn't want to just assume.
